AICCCA Says Don't Let Spring Break Break the Bank
Fairfax, VA - March 8, 2010 — College students and families with children in school across the country are preparing for their annual spring break. With an economy still trying to recover, the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies warns consumers not to overdo this year.
"Signs of a recovering economy are being seen," said Dave Jones, president, AICCCA. "It is always a good idea to be sure that whatever type of vacation you choose, you can afford it."
AICCCA offers these suggestions to keep spring break spending down:
- Travel by car. Choose a destination that you can drive to. Even with higher gas prices, travel costs are much cheaper by car. For college students traveling together, those costs can be split among everyone.
- Make the most of your accommodations. Choosing hotels that offer complimentary continental breakfast will save the cost of one meal per day. Food costs can add up quickly, so a hotel that offers refrigerators or even small kitchens in the rooms can also help to control those costs.
- Beware of travel package scams. Especially popular among the college crowd, package deals often include airfare, hotel, food, activities and tips. Although they tend to cost more up front, there are usually very few surprise expenses to deal with. However, because of their appeal, travel scams are also rampant at this time of year. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Support the local economy. Check in your community and surrounding areas for rodeos, carnivals and festivals. Spring break deals are usually offered and you won't have travel expenses to deal with.
- Consider a volunteer opportunity. A growing number of college students are joining the volunteer movement and choosing to spend their spring break helping others. But even families with small children can be involved with local food banks, soup kitchens and other volunteer opportunities.
