AICCCA Offers Four Step Solution for Holiday Debt

Fairfax, VA - December 30, 2009 — As 2009 comes to a close, many consumers are facing 2010 in more debt due to overspending at the holidays. Most of these consumers are now resolving to do better next year. Even though New Year's resolutions seem to be made only to be broken, consumers with patience and persistence can take control of their financial situation.

"Overspending is common during the holiday season and many consumers don't always prepare for this increased spending," said Dave Jones, president, Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA). "Recognizing that you have been overspending is an important step in ridding yourself of unwanted debt."

To help you pay off your holiday debt and take control of your financial situation, AICCCA offers these four tips:

    1. Go to a bare bones budget. Cut out luxuries and treats for now. Brown-bag your lunch and limit how much you eat out. Check out books and movies from the library and take advantage of other free entertainment. Put the money you save toward your holiday debt.

    2. Bring in some extra cash. If the money you save is not enough to tackle your debt in a reasonable amount of time, a second job or overtime may be in your future. If this is not possible, consider a garage sale or selling something via an online auction site. Again, put the extra money toward your debt.

    3. Prepare for next year. The best way to prevent overspending again at the holidays is to save throughout the year for the expense. Look at what you spent this year and begin saving with that amount as a goal. Consider opening a holiday savings account so that you will not be tempted to use the money for some other reason during the year.

    4. Get help now. Your holiday debt is not unique to your situation. If you find you need help, take advantage of the services of a qualified credit counseling service. An AICCCA member office can help get your financial life back on track. Call 866-703-8787 or visit www.aiccca.org to find an office to serve you.
