AICCCA Press Release

"Red Tuesday" Follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping

Problem debt the gift that lowers your standard of living

Fairfax, VA - November 29, 2010 - If Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping has led to what the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies has dubbed a "Red Tuesday" for some consumers, help is available. According to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday sales rose substantially from last year, with shoppers spending more on discretionary items like jewelry and electronics. Online shopping also increased and with that increase, the use of credit cards. Consumers who spent without a plan may have added to their debt load as they head into the end of the year.

"After the first of the year, our offices see an increase in calls from consumers," said Dave Jones, AICCCA president. "An increased debt load due to holiday overspending is a big contributor."

For consumers who are facing a Red Tuesday AICCCA offers these tips:
  • Stop shopping now. If the amount you planned to spend has been reached or exceeded, evaluate the purchases you made. If you purchased more than one item for someone on your gift list, see if the additional gift is appropriate for another person on your list.

  • Look for alternatives to traditional gifts. Homemade goodies are welcome treats for almost anyone. In addition, you may have most of the ingredients you need already on hand. You could also consider a gift of service like dog walking or garage cleaning.

  • Listen to your conscience. Your friends and family do not want you to go into debt in order to present them with an expensive gift.
